Пассивный компонент (не избирательный по длине волны), имеющий три или более портов, распределяющий оптическую энергию между портами в соответствии с заранее установленными правилами, без какого-либо усиления, переключения или иных активных изменений. В качестве синонима для разветвителя используется термин "ответвитель" (делитель-объединитель). Этот термин используется также для определения структуры разделения оптической энергии между двумя волокнами или между активным устройством и волокном. Оптические разветвители можно разделить на симметричные и асимметричные. Симметричный компонент разветвления - это устройство, матрица передачи которого симметрична по диагонали (МСЭ-T G.671).
